Home Sides Priced Under 1.20: How Often Does the Away Team Score?
At the shortest home price on the ladder, the away team's goal decides BTTS, and the over 2.5 price tells you more than the 1X2 does.

- The question
- When the home side is priced under 1.20, how often does the away team score and both teams get on the scoresheet?
- Sample
- 22 European divisions, 2005/06-2025/26 seasons; 2,586 matches at this rung out of 155,895 priced
When a home side is priced under 1.20, most bettors assume the away team will barely get a kick. I wanted to know how often they actually score, and how often that turns into both teams on the scoresheet. Across 2,586 matches in 22 European divisions, the answer is 43.4%.
The prices implied exactly 43.4% as well, so this rung is priced about right, and fair BTTS Yes odds sit at 2.30. That is a tidy result, but the detail underneath it is where the useful information lives. The over 2.5 price inside the rung moves BTTS a long way, and the away side's scoring is the whole bet.
Rung 1The away side's goal decides almost every BTTS bet here
The home side scored in 96.4% of these games, slightly more than the 93.9% the prices implied. The away side scored in 44.9% against an implied 46.2%, a small gap inside the ±1.9 point range. Put those together and BTTS lands bang on the implied 43.4%.
The practical point is that the home leg is close to a formality, so the bet is really a bet on the away team scoring. They failed to score in 55.1% of games, and the fair price for them to find the net is 2.23. If you want the day-to-day side of how I read this, my BTTS yes predictions page is where I apply it.
View the data: does each side score?
| Implied | Actual | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home side scores (2,586 games) | 93.9% | 96.4% | ±0.7 |
| Away side scores (2,586 games) | 46.2% | 44.9% | ±1.9 |
| Both score (2,586 games) | 43.4% | 43.4% | ±1.9 |
When I look at a fixture at this price, I spend almost no time on the favourite's attack. I look at whether the visitors have a striker who can finish a half-chance, whether they break quickly, and whether the home keeper has been switching off late in games.
Rung 2Under 1.20 is the most accurately priced rung on the ladder
Across all 155,895 priced matches, BTTS landed 51.7% against 50.5% implied, a baseline gap of +1.2 points. The model I use runs light across the board, so a rung only looks interesting if it beats that baseline. Under 1.20 shows a gap of 0.0 points, which is actually below the baseline.
Further up the home price ladder, the picture shifts. The 1.20-1.29 rung saw 46.0% BTTS against 45.5% implied across 3,436 games, and the largest gap was +2.2 points at 1.30-1.39. By 1.50-1.59, BTTS had climbed to 50.1%.

| Actual minus implied | |
|---|---|
| Under 1.20 | 0 pts |
| 1.20-1.29 | +0.5 pts |
| 1.30-1.39 | +2.2 pts |
| 1.40-1.49 | +1.3 pts |
| 1.50-1.59 | +1.2 pts |
I read this as the market taking these heavy home favourites seriously. There is no obvious slack at the very top of the ladder, and I would not go looking for it.
Rung 3The over 2.5 price splits this rung into three different bets
This is the chart I would check first. When the over 2.5 price was under 1.40, BTTS landed 47.1% against 47.3% implied across 1,267 games. At 1.40-1.54 it fell to 41.1%, and at 1.55+ it dropped to 37.7% against 36.4% implied across 499 games.
That is a swing of 9.4 points inside a single home price band. The goals market is telling you how open the game is expected to be, and in an open game the away side gets more chances to nick one.
View the data: inside the rung: split by over 2.5 price
| Implied | Actual | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1.40 (1,267 games) | 47.3% | 47.1% | ±2.7 |
| 1.40-1.54 (820 games) | 41.7% | 41.1% | ±3.4 |
| 1.55+ (499 games) | 36.4% | 37.7% | ±4.3 |
Each band still tracks its own implied figure closely, so the over 2.5 price doesn't hand you an edge. What it gives you is a much better read on whether 2.30 is roughly fair or too short for the specific match in front of you.
Rung 4Lower divisions run hotter, but the sample is small
Top flights make up almost all of this rung, with 2,381 games at 43.1% actual against 43.4% implied. Lower divisions show 46.8% against 43.0% implied, a gap of +3.8 points, but that rests on only 205 games.
The spread between the two groups is 3.7 points. Lower-league sides at this price are rarer, and their favourites may defend less tightly than an elite top-flight club does.

| Implied | Actual | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top flights (2,381 games) | 43.4% | 43.1% | ±2 |
| Lower divisions (205 games) | 43.0% | 46.8% | ±6.8 |
I treat the lower-division figure as a lean to keep an eye on, not a rule. The bigger caveat for the whole rung is concentration: ten home sides account for 55.5% of these matches, so a handful of dominant clubs carry the rate, and a change in one of them changes the picture.
At this price
- Price the away goal
The home side scored in 96.4% of games, so judge BTTS on whether the visitors score. The fair price for that is 2.23.
- Check the goals line
With over 2.5 under 1.40, BTTS ran at 47.1%; at 1.55+ it fell to 37.7%. Let that price set your expectations before you look at 2.30.
- Respect the concentration
Ten home sides make up 55.5% of this rung. Think about the specific favourite, not the band average, before backing BTTS Yes.
