Home Side Priced Under 1.20: How Often Is It 4-0 or Bigger?
A short-priced home favourite usually wins, but how often does it run up a rout? Across 2,586 matches the answer is close to one game in four.

When a home side is priced under 1.20, the result market has little left to offer, so attention drifts to the handicap and correct score lines. The question I put to the data is simple: how often does that favourite win by four goals or more, and which big scores actually land? I read heavy favourites the same way on my exact score tips page.
The headline answer is 23.4% across 2,586 matches, almost exactly the 23.3% my price-based model expected. That makes fair odds of 4.27 for a home win by four or more. The more useful detail sits underneath: how the rate splits at 1.15, which scorelines carry it, and how strongly the half-time score changes the picture.
Rung 1The four-goal win rate climbs steadily as the price shortens
This chart runs from 1.40-1.49 down to under 1.15 and sets the model rate against what happened, with a 95% range on each actual figure. At 1.40-1.49 a 4+ goal home win came in 9.0% of games, fair odds 11.08. One rung out from our band, at 1.20-1.29, it was 15.5% of 3,436 games against 15.4% in the model.
Under 1.20 the rate reaches 23.4%, and it splits clearly at 1.15. Below that line the big win landed 27.8% of 1,374 games against a model 26.3%. At 1.15-1.19 it was 18.4% against 19.9%.

| Model | Actual | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1.15 (1,374 matches) | 26.3% | 27.8% | ±2.4 |
| 1.15-1.19 (1,212 matches) | 19.9% | 18.4% | ±2.2 |
| Under 1.20 (all) (2,586 matches) | 23.3% | 23.4% | ±1.6 |
| 1.20-1.29 (3,436 matches) | 15.4% | 15.5% | ±1.2 |
| 1.30-1.39 (3,932 matches) | 11.5% | 10.9% | ±1 |
| 1.40-1.49 (4,864 matches) | 9.0% | 9.0% | ±0.8 |
Across the whole ladder, actual and model sit within touching distance. The prices were already pricing the rout chance well. That tells me the edge, if there is one, will not come from the rung alone.
Rung 2Two-goal wins are the most common outcome under 1.20
A rout is the exception, not the norm. Under 1.20 the home side won by two in 24.2% of games, by one in 21.2% and by three in 18.9%. Wins by exactly four made up 12.3%, and wins by five or more 11.1%.
The home side also failed to win 12.4% of the time, roughly once in eight games. For a correct score bettor that is the other side of the coin: the price says dominant, but the most likely margin is still a modest one.

| Share of 2,586 matches, % | |
|---|---|
| No home win | 12.4% |
| Won by 1 | 21.2% |
| Won by 2 | 24.2% |
| Won by 3 | 18.9% |
| Won by 4 | 12.3% |
| Won by 5+ | 11.1% |
I read this as a reminder that game management matters. Plenty of strong sides go two up, then slow the match down rather than chase a fifth.
Rung 33-0 and 4-0 carry most of the big-score weight
Here are the individual big scorelines with actual rates, model rates and fair odds. 3-0 led the way at 12.5% (fair odds 8.01), with 4-0 next at 8.5% against a model 8.3%, fair odds 11.75. 5-0 came in 5.5% of games against 4.8% in the model, the widest positive gap in the table alongside 3-0.
Further out, 4-1 landed 5.0% against 5.2%, while 6-0 landed 2.0% with fair odds of 49.73. A winning margin of seven or more came in 1.6% of games, slightly below the model.
| Score | Actual | Model | Gap (pts) | Fair odds | Model odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3-0 | 12.5% | 11.8% | +0.7 | 8.01 | 8.51 |
| 4-0 | 8.5% | 8.3% | +0.2 | 11.75 | 11.99 |
| 4-1 | 5.0% | 5.2% | −0.2 | 19.89 | 19.32 |
| 5-0 | 5.5% | 4.8% | +0.7 | 18.21 | 20.85 |
| 5-1 | 3.2% | 3.0% | +0.2 | 31.54 | 33.29 |
| 6-0 | 2.0% | 2.3% | −0.3 | 49.73 | 42.90 |
| 7+ goal margin | 1.6% | 1.9% | −0.3 | 61.57 | 52.70 |
The main caveat belongs here. The model is a yardstick built from 1X2 and over/under prices, not a quoted correct score price, and real correct score markets carry a heavier margin, so a small gap rarely survives the bookmaker's cut. The rung is also dominated by a handful of elite clubs.
Rung 4The half-time lead decides most four-goal wins
This is the chart I find most telling about match flow. Level or behind at the break, only 4.9% of 872 under-1.20 home sides went on to win by four or more. One goal up, the rate was 16.4%.
From two goals up at half-time, 38.5% of 548 sides finished with a 4+ win. Three or more up, it was 75.2% of 270 games.
View the data: win by 4+ from each half-time position
| Home price under 1.20, % ending in a 4+ goal win | |
|---|---|
| Level or behind at HT (872) | 4.9% |
| 1 goal up at HT (895) | 16.4% |
| 2 goals up at HT (548) | 38.5% |
| 3+ goals up at HT (270) | 75.2% |
These are records of what happened, not live prices, and an in-play market will already have moved with the score. Still, the pattern shows how much of a rout is built before the interval.
At this price
- Split the rung at 1.15
Under 1.15 the 4+ win landed 27.8% of the time, against 18.4% at 1.15-1.19. Treat these as two different prices rather than one band.
- Respect the two-goal margin
Wins by two (24.2%) and by one (21.2%) both came in more often than wins by four (12.3%). A big handicap is a minority outcome even at this price.
- Compare offered odds honestly
Fair odds of 11.75 for 4-0 and 8.01 for 3-0 are the floor, before any margin. If the quoted price is shorter than that, the history offers no support.
