Home Underdogs at 3.00 to 3.99: How Often Do They Avoid Defeat?
When the home side is a 3.00 to 3.99 outsider, it avoids defeat a little less often than the 1X2 prices say. The gap is small and consistent.

- When the home side is priced 3.00 to 3.99, how often does it win or draw compared with what the 1X2 prices imply?

Readers on my daily 1X2 tips page ask me one thing more than almost anything else: is the home outsider at three-and-a-bit worth backing to avoid defeat? It feels like value. You get home advantage, a draw as a safety net and a price that looks generous. So I went to the records and checked what that price rung actually delivers.
Across 23,033 matches with the home side priced 3.00 to 3.99, the home team won or drew 55.3% of the time. The margin-free prices implied 56.5%. That is close, but the shortfall points the same way at every rung above 3.00. The fair price for home-or-draw works out at 1.81.
Rung 1Home outsiders fall slightly short of their price
Each row is a band of home price. One dot shows how often the prices said the home side would win or draw, and the other shows how often it actually did. At 2.50โ2.99 the dots sit on top of each other: 64.1% priced, 64.1% actual. That is a market pricing the slight home outsider accurately.
From 3.00 the dots separate. At 3.00โ3.49 the home side avoided defeat 57.2% of the time against 58.1% priced. At 3.50โ3.99 it was 51.7% against 53.2%. The pattern carries on into the 4.00โ4.99 and 5.00โ6.99 bands, where the actual rate also sits below the price.

| Priced home or draw | Actual home or draw | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.50โ2.99 (31,239 games) | 64.1% | 64.1% | ยฑ0.5 |
| 3.00โ3.49 (15,323 games) | 58.1% | 57.2% | ยฑ0.8 |
| 3.50โ3.99 (7,710 games) | 53.2% | 51.7% | ยฑ1.1 |
| 4.00โ4.99 (7,446 games) | 47.7% | 46.3% | ยฑ1.1 |
| 5.00โ6.99 (5,482 games) | 40.4% | 38.5% | ยฑ1.3 |
For the full 3.00โ3.99 rung the gap is โ1.2 points, and the 95% range is ยฑ0.6 points. The shortfall is bigger than the noise, so I treat it as real, but it is small. In plain terms, the home outsider is very slightly overrated, and the draw does not rescue it often enough to change that.
Rung 2Top-flight home outsiders show the biggest shortfall
This table looks only at the home win and splits the rung into three league groups. Top flights are the weakest of the three: priced 28.2%, landed 27.2%, a gap of โ1.0 points and a flat-stake return of โ9.1%. When a big club travels in a top division, the home side tends to be a little more outclassed than the price allows.
Lower divisions sit closest to their price, at 28.0% actual against 28.4% priced, with a return of โ7.3%. Other leagues fall in between at 27.2% against 27.7%. None of the groups beats its price. The difference between them is a matter of how much you lose, not whether you lose.
| Group | Matches | Priced | Actual | Gap (pts) | Return |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top flights | 7,230 | 28.2% | 27.2% | โ1.0 | โ9.1% |
| Lower divisions | 9,269 | 28.4% | 28.0% | โ0.4 | โ7.3% |
| Other leagues | 6,534 | 27.7% | 27.2% | โ0.5 | โ8.7% |
Rung 3Best prices cut the loss but do not remove it
Here is what flat stakes returned in this rung. Backing the home win at a major bookmaker's main price lost โ8.3%, and the draw lost โ7.9%. Taking the best available price instead cut those losses to โ1.9% on the home win and โ3.3% on the draw.
That is the clearest message on the page. Most of the damage is the margin, and shopping for price recovers a large share of it. It still leaves you behind.

| At main price | At best price | |
|---|---|---|
| Home win | โ8.3% | โ1.9% |
| Draw | โ7.9% | โ3.3% |
The main caveat: a rung that matched or beat its price in the past is not a betting system. Most of these gaps sit close to their uncertainty bands, and the margin is charged on every single bet you place. The 1.81 fair price for home-or-draw is a ceiling too, because a real double-chance market carries its own margin.
Rung 4The half-time score settles most of these games
This heatmap splits the rung by the half-time score. When the home outsider led at the break, in 23.9% of matches, it went on to win 64.1% and draw 22.4%, losing only 13.5%. When the away side led, in 33.1% of matches, the favourite closed it out 77.7% of the time, and the home team won just 5.9%.
The level-at-half-time row is the biggest group at 43.0%. There the draw is the single likeliest result at 38.9%, with the away win at 36.8% and the home win at 24.2%.

| Home win | Draw | Away win | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home ahead at HT (23.9%) | 64.1% | 22.4% | 13.5% |
| Level at HT (43.0%) | 24.2% | 38.9% | 36.8% |
| Away ahead at HT (33.1%) | 5.9% | 16.4% | 77.7% |
For anyone trading in-play, this is the row that matters. If the scores are level at the break, the home outsider has about a two-in-three chance of avoiding defeat. If it goes behind, that chance falls away sharply.
At this price
- Demand more than 1.81
The fair price for home-or-draw in this rung was 1.81. Any double-chance price at or below that is paying you less than the outcome rate, before the margin is even counted.
- Always shop the price
The home win lost โ8.3% at the main price but โ1.9% at the best price. If you back this rung at all, the price you take matters more than the pick.
- Be wary in top flights
Top-flight home outsiders landed 27.2% against 28.2% priced and returned โ9.1%. Lower divisions held closest to their price, at 28.0% against 28.4%.
