Over 2.5 Priced 1.50 or Shorter: How Often Is It Still 0 or 1 Goal?

The shortest over 2.5 prices still throw up the odd 0-0 or 1-0, but less often than the market allows for.

The question
When over 2.5 goals is priced 1.50 or shorter, how often does the match still finish with 0 or 1 goal, and is that rate higher than the price implies?
Sample
22 European divisions (11 top flights, 11 lower divisions), 2005/06–2025/26, 155,870 matches with goal prices

When over 2.5 goals is quoted at 1.50 or shorter, the market expects plenty of goals. The worst result for anyone holding that over is a 0-0 or a scrappy 1-0, and I wanted to know how often it arrives. I see this price band often on my over 2.5 predictions page, so it matters to me personally.

Across 7,855 matches on this rung, under 1.5 goals landed in 13.0% of them against 14.3% implied by the prices. That works out to fair odds of 7.69 against an implied 6.99. Put simply, the dead game turns up a bit less often than the price says. The gap sits outside the noise band, but it is small, and the under 1.5 line here comes from a model rather than a quoted price.

Rung 1Under 1.5 runs below its price at the shortest rung

The ladder sets the margin-free price for under 1.5 against what actually happened, rung by rung along the over 2.5 price. At 1.50 or shorter the actual rate is 13.0% with a range of ±0.7 points, so the −1.3 point gap clears the noise. The next rung up, 1.51–1.59, shows something similar: 16.6% actual against 18.2% priced.

Further along the gaps close up. At 1.70–1.79 it is 22.3% against 22.6%, and by 1.90–1.99 the actual rate of 26.8% sits slightly above the 26.6% priced.

My read is that the market prices middle-of-the-road matches about right and slightly overrates the chance of a dud only at the very short end. That is a narrow finding, not a reason to back every short over without thinking.

Rung 2Nearly half of short-priced overs reach four goals

This chart splits each rung by full-time goals. On the 1.50 or shorter rung, 4+ goals made up 46.4% of games, 3 goals 21.8%, 2 goals 18.8% and 0–1 goals 13.0%. At 2.00–2.09, by contrast, 0–1 goals made up 28.4% and 4+ goals only 24.6%.

The point for a bettor is that the danger to a short over is not mainly the 0-0. It is the 2-goal game, which turns up more often than the 0–1 outcome. Only 2.9% of these short-priced overs finished goalless.

When I look at a very short over, I am really asking whether this one ends 2-0 or 1-1 and stops there. Game state and a side settling for a narrow lead worry me more than a blank.

Rung 3The gap has held across every three-season block

Here the rung is cut into three-season blocks. In every block, actual under 1.5 finished below the priced line. The first block, 05/06–07/08, priced it at 16.6% with 14.4% landing. The latest, 23/24–25/26, priced it at 14.1% with 12.0% landing across 1,953 games.

The prices have come down over time, but the results have come down with them, so the shortfall has not closed. I would not lean hard on any single block, though. Each one is a slice of the full sample, so the noise on each is wider.

Rung 4Top flights carry the gap, lower divisions do not

The table breaks the rung into splits. Top flights account for most of the games at 6,543 and show 12.5% actual against 14.1% priced, a −1.6 point gap. Lower divisions sit at 15.6% against 15.4%, and with a ±2.0 range that is as good as dead level. Home favourites show 12.7% against 14.2%, while away favourites at 13.9% against 14.7% sit inside their range.

The half-time rows are partly common sense. Once two goals are in by the break, under 1.5 is gone, so that row reads 0.0%. A 0-0 half-time gave 42.6% against 43.0% priced, which is close enough to treat as fair.

The main caveat applies here and across the whole study. Under 1.5 is derived from the over 2.5 price through a Poisson model, which is a simplification, so part of any gap may come from the model and not the market. Gaps inside the 95% range are noise, and none of this is a staking plan.

At this price

  • Fear the 2-goal game

On this rung 2 goals came up in 18.8% of matches, more than the 13.0% for 0–1 goals. Judge the over on whether the match stalls at two, not on whether it ends goalless.

  • Weight top flights more

The shortfall shows up in top flights at 12.5% actual against 14.1% priced. In lower divisions the 15.6% actual is in line with the price, so treat those games as fairly priced.

  • Respect a goalless half

Even at 1.50 or shorter, a 0-0 half-time led to under 1.5 in 42.6% of games. The pre-match price tells you little once the first half has gone blank.

Questions bettors ask

How often does a 1.50 over 2.5 end with under 1.5 goals?

Across 7,855 matches priced 1.50 or shorter, 13.0% finished with 0 or 1 goal. The prices implied 14.3%, so the dud game came up slightly less often than expected.

What are fair odds for under 1.5 when over 2.5 is very short?

Based on the results, fair odds for under 1.5 on this rung are 7.69, against 6.99 implied by the margin-free prices. That line is modelled rather than quoted, so treat the gap with some caution.

How often do heavily backed over 2.5 games finish 0-0?

Only 2.9% of matches with over 2.5 at 1.50 or shorter ended 0-0. By far the more common outcome was 4+ goals, at 46.4%.
